Please support our legal challenge to save Lincolnshire Wolds A.O.N.B. from oil drilling.

SOS Biscathorpe is a group of local volunteers who are campaigning to prevent oil drilling going ahead in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), home to a precious chalk-stream; there are only 200 of these fragile ecosystems in the world.

On 3rd November 2023 a government-appointed Planning Inspector decided to over-rule Lincs County Council and allow 15 years of oil drilling at Biscathorpe. The Inspector acknowledged that the development would cause harm to the AONB and that it contravened local planning policies.

He also recognised that the amount of oil to be extracted will be very small (meeting UK energy demands for only a few days) and it could be exported. Nonetheless, he concluded that it was ‘in the national interest’.

We think this decision is wrong.

The International Energy Agency has stated that there can be no new fossil fuel development if the world is to stay within safe limits of global heating and meet the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. The impact of burning any oil found at Biscathorpe was omitted from the Environmental Impact Assessment.

SOS Biscathorpe have brought together a brilliant legal team who believe we have good grounds to apply for a Statutory Review. Our legal challenge has been filed with the High Court and we need to raise an initial £20,000 to contribute towards the legal costs to date. Our lawyers are working at a fraction of their usual fees and every penny donated will go directly towards the costs of the
case.
